Local Currency

Vietnam's national currency is the Dong (VND), which usually converts at a rate of approx. 17000 to $1US. However, recent economic conditions have caused higher than normal inflation, so rates may differ. The currency is available in bill form in denominations of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000, 100000, 200000 and 500000, with recently introduced coins available in 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 values. The currency is not usually available outside of Vietnam, and it is important to remember to convert your money out of Dong before leaving as you may not be able to once you are home.

US dollars are also widely used in Vietnam. The condition of the notes is important and you may not receive expected value if the bills are old or torn. Exchange between US dollars and Dong is easily available in the country and carrying a mixture of both is usually a good idea.

ATMs are widely available in the major cities and work with most Visa and Mastercard types, with a small charge being applied to each transaction. Travellers cheques are similarly accepted, again with a processing fee. Western Union and other money transfer services are available, though are generally more expensive than other methods.
