See all locations in Southwest MichiganBeaches and berries, sand dunes and sunsets, town and country. Southwest Michigan is a potpourri of agriculture, recreation, city lights and lighthouses. This corner of the Lower Peninsula benefits from Lake Michigan-moderated coastal temperatures and sandy soil, which have made it a productive fruit belt. Ribbons of roads through gently rolling terrain connect orchards and vineyards, roadside stands and wineries, small town antique stores and laid-back resort areas. Inland lakes, streams and rivers, trails, parks and nature areas offer fishing, canoeing, bicycling and hiking, while King Salmon lures charter fishing parties to the Great Lake.
Along the shore from the state border northward, Lake Michigan Beachtowns are known for unique shops, B&Bs, festivals, the “Art Coast” cities of Saugatuck/Douglas, South Haven’s Maritime Museum and, of course, mile after mile of sandy beaches.
Holland’s Tulip Time Festival is a blooming good time each spring, but the flavor of the Netherlands lasts all year at attractions like the DeKlomp Wooden Shoe & Delft Factory and outstanding collection of Dutch art, books, woodcuts and furniture at the Holland Museum. Other must-see regional attractions include the Air Zoo and space museum in Kalamazoo, vintage vehicles uniquely displayed in the red barns of the Gilmore Car Museum, and the 19th century architecture of charming and historic Marshall.
