Many historic sites are free or offer a sug- gested donation, including the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center in Hartford, Ca- hokia Mounds in Collinsville and Fort de Chartres in Prairie du Rocher. It’s free to enter Alton’s National Great Rivers Mu- seum or take a tour of the adjacent Melvin Price Locks & Dam. Arrive at Raging Rivers WaterPark in Grafton after 3pm and get discounted admission. Walk or drive through the inspirational National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville for free. And wine tasting is complimentary on the Heartland Rivers Wine Trail.

the Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail that leads to Pere Marquette State Park, where out- door fun includes everything from hiking to horseback riding. See stunning fall col- ors on a drive along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway and navigate your way out of The Great God- frey Maze. In winter, be dazzled by the Way of Lights holiday event at the Na- tional Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows or watch bald eagles soar among the bluffs in Grafton.

All trails seem to lead down a historic path in Southwest Illinois. Visit the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center to see where the trailblazing duo embarked on their history-making expedition. Learn about French Colonial life in Cahokia and at Fort de Chartres. Explore the remains of a Native American city that mysteriously disappeared at Cahokia Mounds. In Pere Marquette State Park hike bluffs once traveled by explorers Pere Jacques Mar- quette and Louis Joliet.
