Palm Desert , about 21km (13 miles) southeast of Palm Springs, was once best known for its El Paseo Shopping District , a mile-long street that locals had dubbed "the Rodeo Drive of the desert." Truth is, there's more shopping here than even Paris Hilton could handle. The district has an amazing array of inviting restaurants, art galleries, clothing boutiques, bistros, and bakeries. There's also the Gardens on El Paseo , home to Saks Fifth Avenue, Ann Taylor Loft, Pottery Barn, Brooks Brothers, Tommy Bahamas, Talbots, Williams-Sonoma, and Tiffany & Co. (that's the short list). In fact, there are over 20 jewelers, plus home furnishing, and restaurants serving steak, seafood, wood-fired pizza, fine Italian, and more. We haven't even mentioned Westfield Palm Desert , a cool retreat in summer with over 180 stores and a multiscreen cinema.
With all this bling-bling shopping, it's easy to overlook the art galleries. But don't. Over 20 galleries line the town's mile-long shopping district or fall inside the Gardens. Paintings, sculptures, blown glass, antiques, even golf art at Graeme Baxter Golf Gallery--you'll be hard-pressed not to find something that catches your artistic eye.
