The Alley Entertainment District in downtown Montgomery continues to
grow with the addition of two restaurants and an upscale bar. The Alley
Entertainment district now includes a baseball field, a local brewery, basement
jazz club, two performance facilities, an outdoor riverfront amphitheater, several
restaurants, bars and a New Orleans-style alley.
The Alley connects Commerce Street & Tallapoosa Street in downtown Montgomery and is adjacent to, or just one block away from, four group-friendly
hotels. With a dozen museums and an entertainment area for nightlife, the city
has reformed itself into a group-friendly overnight destination.
Montgomery Civil Rights Site Wins Award
One of the newest Civil Rights sites in Montgomery is The Freedom Rides
exhibit on South Court Street. The site recently won a Merit Award in an international contest for Graphic Design. The Freedom Rides exhibit is mounted on the outside of the structure of the former Greyhound Bus Station and is one of
the many Civil Rights sites available for group tours.
F. Scott & Zelda Museum Celebrates 20th Anniversary
The F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum celebrated its 20th Anniversary
this past year. The only museum in the world for either Fitzgerald contains
many artifacts from Scott and Zelda’s life, including photographs, original
letters, various editions of Scott’s novels, originals of Zelda’s art, and furniture
from Zelda’s childhood home.
New Museum for Montgomery Announced
The Wright brothers established the first aviation school in America in 1910 in
Montgomery. Now one hundred years later a museum to the historic commercial
flight school has been announced. The museum, close to downtown Montgomery, will focus on aviation history with interactive and educational components, including a replica of an aircraft from the Wright’s era and those flown in the Montgomery area. The museum is planned as part of the Bell Street Improvement project which is currently underway. Groundbreaking on the Montgomery Wright Brothers Museum is expected this year.
