If you're looking for new and exciting vacation adventures, then Kansas is the place you want to be. History buffs can explore the state's legendary cowboy towns or visit Kansas' countless museums, which celebrate the state's pioneer, aviation, farming and Native American legacies. Outdoor enthusiasts will be happy to know that Kansas is still home on the range to the American bison, which can be viewed up close at two of the state's wildlife refuges and along the highways in Western Kansas and the Flint Hills. And for nature lovers, Kansas is home to the largest remaining stand of tallgrass prairie in North America, providing a glimpse of what the continent looked like 200 years ago.
Kansas is home to nine scenic byways, two of which are officially designated National Scenic Byways. In addition to the breathtaking surroundings, you'll enjoy an abundance of activities and a variety of incredible terrain, wildlife and living styles. Each scenic byway tells a story, and the stories in Kansas are as fascinating as they come.
Kansas' "big sky," dramatic sunsets, and great variability in temperature and precipitation are all important aspects of the regional personality. Winter blizzards, violent windstorms, and heavy rains are common throughout the state, and the continental climate (on occasion) produces rapid temperature extremes.
Generally the summers are quite warm, the winters are mild, and the humidity is on the moderate side. January is the coldest month, with average high temperatures near 0 degrees C (31 degrees F). July is the warmest month, with average high temperatures near 27 degrees C (81 degrees F). Much hotter summers and harsh, cold winters are not uncommon.
Annual precipitation amounts range from 760mm - 1000mm (30 - 40 inches) in the east, while drier conditions are common in the west. In Kansas you can enjoy four distinct seasons, each with its own unique qualities.
