The local chamber of commerce calls this "the best kept secret in the San Bernardino Mountains" - and they may not be stretching the truth. Most guide books don't even mention the place, which suits residents fine. Tucked between Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead, Green Valley Lake is all about small-town summer fun: hiking, bird-watching, mountain biking, swimming, and a regular parade of community events.
There's no mall or video arcades, but the downtown has a market, two restaurants, and a smattering of the important services (hardware store, beauty salon) every small town once had . Be sure to check out the local musicians' jam, held on the second Saturday of each month from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Lake Inn Restaurant (out-of-town musicians are welcome to sit in). It's most often plenty of fiddlin' tunes, from ragtime to Celtic ballads. At the lake, you can swim, rent a canoe, and fish (the lake, known for great trout fishing, is stocked twice a month).
If you want the lake close at hand, stay at the recreation area campground a few blocks away. From the campground there's a trail that leads to the summit of Green Mountain. In summer, the alpine meadows (you are at 2,133m / 7,000 feet) are dotted with corn lilies swaying softly in the wind. The town is also something of a haven for artists. On Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, local artists open their studios and homes for tours. No surprise, on the 4th of July, Green Valley celebrates in grand small-town style with a family fun day and barbecue.
