INDEX OF ALL states AND LOCATIONSIn a country as large as the United States it is inevitable that the variety of available food is very large indeed. Major cities such as San Francisco, New York and others have restaurants of all persuasions. In addition to fine dining restaurants the USA is home to a large number of chain restaurants and fast food restaurants. Take away restaurants are also a very common. Visitors will notice that the portion size in american restaurants may be much larger than they are used to especially if eating at a chain restaurant.
The long history of immigration has brought many varieties of international cuisine to the US although much of it has been "americanised" to suit the local palate. If there is a distinctive food that could be said to be home grown it would probably be the barbeque. Barbequed ribs with a sauce or marinade is a fantastic US eating experience and is probably best in the south, however can be found throughout the country. Other local specialities in the south include "grits" which is a ground corn dish and gumbo a stew of seafood and sausage.
Drinks in the USA are as varied as the landscape and the people. Beer, wine and spirits are all commonly consumed. It should be noted that many restaurants do not serve alcohol.
