See all locations in Prairies and Lakes Region - TexasDallas - a city as bold as brass, and as subtle as a skyrocket is one of Texas' most recognizable vacation destinations. Located in the mid east of the state Dallas is a mixture of ultra modern city, old world colony and comfortable suburban neighbourhoods brimming with shopping centres, theme parks and historical landmarks. Famous for a love of all things football the residents follow the local Dallas Cowboys gridiron team with a fervor reminiscent of a fundamentalist revivalist meeting.
Traditional home of Caddo Native Americans Dallas was claimed by Spain, France and Mexico before being annexed by the US in 1845. It was officially incorporated in 1856 and quickly grew into a successful economic centre through the completion of rail lines in the 1870s and many entrepreneurial enterprises that brought in money and settlers from all over the US. This was boosted by the discovery of oil in 1930 and today Dallas is a manufacturing centre for high tech components as well as being home to the greatest number of corporate headquarters in the US.
Influenced by the moist winds of the Gulf of Mexico and hot, dry winds coming from the arid north and west Dallas' climate is humid and subtropical in the summer months, with average daytime temperatures of 35 degrees C (95 deg F), and cool and dry in the winter months averaging 14 degrees C (27 deg F) during the day. Traditionally there is more rainfall in the spring and autumn months.
