The exchange rates with various currencies varies from day to day so check out the exchange rate for your currency before travelling. The US dollar is used as the benchmark to which many other currencies are compared.
ATMs are found commonly in all urban centres and also in convenience stores, gas stations and the like. Many will charge a fee for use, typically of a dollar to a few dollars. Most of the ATMs will accept Visa and MasterCard and Maestro and Cirrus cards also. Credit cards are pretty much universally accepted at hotels, restaurants and stores.
Sales Tax, VAT or GST is not administered federally so that the various states will have different sales taxes applicable to purchases. These will vary from aroun 3 - 10% of the price of the purchase and in most cases will be added to the displayed price. Some items like fresh food from a supermarket will often be exempt from sales tax. Additionally tips are in common use in the United States, especially in restaurants and hotels and can almost be thought of as compulsory so keep this in mind when travelling (see the section on culture and customs for further information).
