See all locations in San Francisco Bay AreaCalifornia Academy of Sciences spotlights amazing exhibits and ultra-green technology.
San Francisco's breathtaking reinvention of its signature science museum in Golden Gate Park takes its rightful place as one of the city's not-to-be-missed destinations. Designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, this reinvention of the Academy, billed as "the largest public LEED-certified building in the world," lets you learn about how it uses natural ventilation and recycled blue jean insulation (this is the city of Levi Strauss, after all).
But equally impressive are the science exhibits and displays, including a 3-story walk-through rain forest, the world's deepest living coral reef tank, and live animal exhibits including penguins in a naturalized enclosure. The undulating green roof, planted with native perennials and annual wildflowers, is another big draw for visitors--and butterflies.
An array of special tours are also available at the Academy, including behind-the-scenes visits that shed even more light on the amazing building and its inhabitants. Wine and Dine evening events and frequent lectures are also scheduled throughout the year.
