See all locations in Gulf Coast - TexasNestled on the banks of the Brazos River, city was founded in 1828 by Stephen F. Austin as one of his original settlements in Texas. Brazoria derives its name from the Spanish word Abrazar, meaning embrace, which was the Brazos River's original name. Today, visitors can find restaurants, bed & breakfasts, and easy access to nearby beautiful Gulf Coast beaches.
When entering Brazoria on FM 521, travelers pass over a piece of history. Built in 1939, the Brazoria Historic Bridge was the first traffic bridge on the Brazos River and served as a vital passageway into Brazoria. It will be retired to pedestrian traffic when a new bridge is completed. The Brazoria Historic Bridge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Brazoria is a tight-knit community that acknowledges its rich history and clings to its historical importance. To honor that history, The Brazoria Heritage Foundation restored the 1933 elementary school and created the Brazoria Civic Center.
