Arkansas Information
The southern state of Arkansas ranks as the 29th largest US State by area and the 32nd largest by population. The Mississippi River makes up most of its eastern border with Tennessee and MIssissippi. Louisiana lies to the South, Missouri to the North, Texas and Oklahoma to the West. The state capital, Little Rock, has a population of just under 1 million people living within the metropolitan area.
Arkansas' recognised nickname, dating from the 1970s and still widely used today, is 'the Natural State'. With countless mountains, forests, river valleys and many national parks, the nickname is well deserved. The landscape varies widely, from the Ozark Plateau in the Northwest and the Ouachita Mountains in the west to the rich alluvial soils of the Arkansas Delta flatlands bordering the Mississippi and the undulating Grand Prairie region in the Southeast.
The Buffalo National River in the Ozarks was America's first national river with woodlands, towering limestone bluffs and protected wilderness areas along its 240 kilometre (150 mile) length. This beautiful river offers smallmouth bass fishing, all manner of water sports, hiking, horse riding and much more - and this is just one small feature of an adventure packed state for lovers of the outdoors.
Arkansas' biggest tourist destination is Hot Springs in the Ouchita region which has a national park, a very substantial botanical garden, a major thoroughbred racetrack, a theme and water park, and a thriving arts community.
