Arizona Information

Located in the southwest of the United States, the rust coloured canvas of Arizona is diagonally bisected by a swathe of emerald green with small towns scattered like jewels across the landscape. It’s is a blend of natural beauty and concrete cities with a taste of the Old West thrown in for flavour. It’s the sixth largest state in size and the fifteenth most populous state in the US and is famous for cowboys, cacti and the magnificent Grand Canyon.

Traditional home of the Hohokam and Sobaipuri Indians the region was first explored by the Spanish in the 1540s. In the ensuing centuries the area was governed in turn by the Spanish, the Mexicans and Americans until eventually being incorporated as the 48th State of the US in 1912. Farming and mining, so important to the state economy, waned during the Depression and gave way to an expanding tourism trade that saw easterners and westerners escape the cold of their home towns and flock to the warm winters of Arizona. The population expanded rapidly in the years after the second world war and this increase has continued in the decades since. Today the population of Arizona is more than six and a half million people.

The northeast of the state is defined by a high, flat plateau, whilst the centre is bisected by a mountain range running northwest to southeast, and the area to the southwest consists of arid desert valleys and shallow mountains. The climate of Arizona is essentially desert but the localized weather is dependent on the different elevations throughout the state. Winters are generally mild with a daytime average of 19°C (66°F) and the summers can be very hot averaging 40°C (103°F) during the day. The capital city of Phoenix is in the central south of Arizona. It is one of the largest cities in the US and therefore has all the tourist and sightseeing opportunities of a big city. On the other hand Tucson, further to the South, has the feel of a small town with the history of the Old West and with a young and dynamic population. Possibly the most well known feature of Arizona is the Grand Canyon in the north of the state, a geological wonder etched from the desert floor by the Colorado River over millions of years. The 349 km (217 miles) long canyon is a monument to nature’s persistence and attracts around five million visitors a year. To the west of the Grand Canyon the dazzling multicoloured cliffs of the Painted Desert rise out of the landscape like a giant licorice all-sort and then give way to the scrabbly hills of the Petrified Forrest National Park in the northeast of the state. Barringer Meteor Crater, near Winslow in the central west, is a massive crater 1200 m (4000 feet) wide and 170 m (570 feet) deep. It was created about 40,000 years ago and never fails to inspire awe in those who venture to this desolate spot in the middle of the desert landscape. The flat, barren expanse of the Monument Valley plains on the Utah border is broken by towering, multicoloured mesas and buttes that thrust up from the desert floor. This is the landscape of the classic Western movie and is a sightseeing location that should not be missed

Arizona, the Grand Canyon state, is a holiday destination that offers an exciting escape into America’s historical Wild West as well as providing all the luxuries and conveniences of twenty-first century towns and cities.
