Known as the ‘Final Frontier’ Alaska is the northernmost state of the United States and is bordered by Canada to the east, the Bering Strait and Russia to the west, the North Pacific Ocean to the south and the Arctic Ocean to the north. The capital city of Juneau is situated on the panhandle to the south and is close to the Canadian border of British Columbia; while Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, is located along the coast of the picturesque Cook Inlet in south-central Alaska.
Not often included in the rankings of the ‘Lower 48’ states Alaska is the largest of the states and is the only non-contiguous US state in North America. With a population of less than 700,000, Alaska boasts the lowest population density of any state and is home to some of the most magnificent, unspoiled countryside in the world.
Purchased from Russia in 1867, Alaska was not given official US territorial status until 1912. It was incorporated into the US in January 1959 becoming the 49th state.
When planning a trip to Alaska it is important to fully understand its vast size and realize that it is impossible to see it all in just a few weeks - in fact it would be difficult to explore it all in an entire lifetime! The natural beauty of the Alaskan countryside is truly unique and so too will be the wonders you’ll experience. Highlights of an Alaskan adventure should include: Kayaking among the translucent blue icebergs of Prince William Sound; viewing the magnificent wildlife among the ancient rainforests of the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary in Herring Cove in the far south; hike in the beautiful Denali National Park in south central Alaska, home to the highest mountain in the US - Mt McKinkley (6,194m or 23,320 feet).
If bears are what you’re after why not take a floatplane trip over Kodiak Island and see the famous 1000 pound bears, or stop over in a US Forestry Service cabin on Admiralty Island, home to the highest population of bears in Alaska. A visit to the Chena Hot Springs 100 km (60 miles) outside Fairbanks are perfect for relaxation, or view the northern lights (aurora borealis) between September and April in Fairbanks.
You’ll find there are more wonders in the magnificent, unspoiled ‘Final Frontier’ of Alaska than you could ever hope to experience in a lifetime - but you’ll have the time of your life trying to!
