See all locations in Society IslandsThe Society Islands Archipelago (composed of the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands) is a group of high, tropical islands surrounded by lagoons. The main island of Tahiti is the largest of the Polynesian islands with Papeete as its administrative capital. Tahiti boasts two major volcanic masses: the larger one, crowned with clouds, rises up more than 2000 metres to the summit of Mount Orohena in the heart of Tahiti Nui. The smaller one, Mount Mairenui, peaks at 1300 metres right in the center of Tahiti Iti. Both islands are connected by the Taravao Isthmus.
The Society Archipelago includes the island of Moorea, only separated from Tahiti by a 17 kilometre-wide deep channel, with her volcanic peaks that reflect in the tranquil waters of her lagoon; Huahine, the magical and savage island, located 175 km to the northwest of Tahiti; secretive with her deeply-rooted traditions; Raiatea and Tahaa, sacred islands blessed with fertile valleys, share the same lagoon and offer particularly favourable navigational conditions; the famous island of Bora Bora, overlooking the unreal beauty of her waters abundant with marine life, her coconut grove islets fringed with white sand and coral gardens. And of course, Maupiti, the heart island, coiled in the middle of a jade lagoon.
