Stockholm is located on south west Sweden and is both the the largest city and capital of the country. Founded in the thirteenth century, Stockholm has passed through the ages as an important economic and political centre for the region.
Today Stockholm is a one of the prettiest cities in Scandinavia, hallmarked by its natural beauty, green open spaces, sparkling waterways and traditional architecture. It is a very popular tourist destination with over a million visitors a year taking advantage of its many attractions.
Stockholm is comprised of an archipelago of some 24,000 islands situated between the Baltic Sea and Lake Malaren. This unique geography has given it the unofficial title "Venice of the North" as the city itself is built upon several large islands broken up by rivers and waterways. A remarkable 30% of the city is taken up by parkland and green spaces making Stockholm one of Europe's most open, green and clean cities.
During the summer months visitors can enjoy 18 hour days with mild weather which is quite a contrast to the winters with 8 hours of sunshine and cold weather. These distinct seasons gives the city a real variety of experiences for tourists. The summers are great for exploring the islands, swimming at the beaches and exploring the green parklands. The cold and sometimes snowy winter transforms the city into a fairy tale atmosphere when millions of lights and candles appear in most windows. Stockholm is a city that enjoys every season with gusto and always has many activities to suit the moment.
A significant tourist attraction includes the great many historical buildings that have survived six centuries of peacetime. Happily, unlike much of Europe, Stockholm was never bombed or ravaged in the wars making walking down the ancient streets that have been beautifully maintained an amazing walk back in time. The grandest examples of historical architecture belong to the city hall, the royal palace and Drottingham Palace where the royal family resides. As can be imagined Stockholm has a great many museums and art galleries that are ideal for loosing yourself in.
A boat trip can be an enjoyable way to explore the numerous surrounding islands. Some of these are completely deserted, others have small communities on them and make an ideal place to stop over and grab a bite to eat.
Stockholm is an amazing, beautiful city that has a wide range of attractions that will appeal to many people. It is an extremely popular tourist destination and it isn't hard to understand why.
