The pulsating heart of the country
One of the most exciting cities in Europe, Madrid is quite literally at Spain’s heart. As well as being the country’s administrative hub, the city is also filled with enough museums, palaces, historic monasteries and gorgeous gardens to exhaust even the most determined visitor.
Highlights include the superb Prado Museum, which houses arguably one of the world’s best art collections, and the Centro de Arte Reina Sofi a, renowned for its amazing collection of Spanish artworks, including Picasso’s famous Guernica, painted as an outcry against the Spanish Civil War.
Make sure you save some energy for when the sun goes down, for this is when the city really comes to life and sleep is apparently deemed unnecessary. The nightlife, or La marcha, as the Spanish call it, reigns supreme in Madrid, with live music and entertainment everywhere: restaurants, tapas bars and clubs teem with people and the whole city throbs with a pulsating energy. Flamenco is of course the essence of Spain and you can find some of the country’s best in Madrid. Why not put on those dancing shoes and give it a go yourself?
