Scotland has excellent medical facilities and hospitals. Emergency treatment is free at National Health Service Accident and Emergency Public hospital departments. If you're admitted to hospital or referred to an out-patient clinic you will have to pay, unless you are EU citizen or come from a country with a reciprocal agreement with the UK such as Australia, NZ or Canada. Travel insurance to cover medical expenses is higly recommended.

Crime is a problem in the inner-city areas of the bigger cities such as Glasgow, but mostly amongst gangs therefore as a tourist you won't be a target. But, as always, tourists should be careful in crowded areas as pickpockets don't discriminate.

There are perhaps only two natural hazards in Scotland: the weather (can be freezing) and midges (small fly-like insects that bite). Both can be easily handled: pack adequate clothing, including thermals, and use a repellant when outdoors.

Emergency Numbers in the UK are 999 or 112. The operator will ask which service: Ambulance, Fire, Police etc.

We strongly advise that all Australian travellers check the latest travel advice on the Australian Government Smart Traveller site.
