Scotland is a part of the United Kingdom and is located in the northern part of Britain. It is a land of great contrast although is perhaps best known for it's loch's and highlands. The population of Scotland is just over 5 million.
If you make the most of the entire 78,000 (or so) square kilometres of Scotland you'll be rewarded with a journey of contrasts: white sandy beaches to majestic snow-capped peaks; eerily beautiful lochs to hills dressed in the purple blooms of heather. And the landscape is not the only surprise package. Scotland's cities are full of contradictory statements: Edinburgh with it's castle holding command over the inner city, has a fascinating 'old' town with graceful architecture and history at every turn juxtaposed with trendy bars and the latest retail outlets; Glasgow has a slightly seedy side co-existing with a sophisticated culture of fine dining and a thriving art scene.
You'll enjoy the scenery as you travel but you'll enjoy it even more when you know the history behind the various regions such as Glencoe, a U-shaped valley with some of the most spectacular mountains in the UK and the site of the Glencoe massacre of 1692. The area is virtually uninhabited today and the stillness that descends over the landscape makes the scenery all the more hauntingly beautiful.
