Local Customs

The people of the Philippines are full of life and extremely laid back. They are warm, friendly and welcoming making any visit to their country an enjoyable one.

When it comes to tipping throughout the country, most establishments already include a service charge however if this has not been included usually a 10% tip is acceptable.

The majority of the country's population is Christian. This includes 83% Roman Catholics, 9% Protestants, 5% Muslims and 3% are Buddhists or belong to other religion groups.

The larger cities in the Philippines are very much Westernized however in the more rural areas the traditional Filipino ways are clearly evident. It is important while traveling throughout the country to observe and respect religious rules and Filipino beliefs. Local laws and penalties should also be carefully observed. Penalties for drug offenses are severe and it is illegal to take photographs of official buildings for publication.

Where poverty is prevalent in the larger cities try to avoid giving money to beggars and instead offer food. Even though Gays and Lesbians are accepted it is always wise to be discreet while in public to avoid any offense.
