Norway’s largest international airport is Oslo Airport Gardermoen. There is also Sandefjord Airport Torp which is smaller and has scheduled flights to 14 destinations in Europe and 3 destinations in Norway. Moss Airport, Rygge also flies to 5 domestic and 12 international destinations and Stavanger Airport, Sola has flights to/from 8 international destinations and offers cheaper flights than the other airports. Bergen Airport, Flesland also offers flights to/from major European cities and domestic airports include Trondheim and Tromso.
Domestic flights in Norway are very popular and competitively priced with the largest operators being SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Norwegian and Wideroe. Norway is a big country and air travel is the most convenient method to get around. Flights in northern Norway are fairly expensive as the planes are generally small together with the airports however flights in southern Norway are cheaper.
Norway’s rail network connects Oslo to other major cities and is operated by Norges Statsbaner. Trains are generally well maintained and comfortable but buy tickets in advance to get a good price. To travel cheaply by rail it is wise to purchase a Norwegian Rail Pass. Norway unfortunately does not have a high speed rail system and train journeys can take up to six or seven hours between some cities. Trains are frequent but make sure you book in advance and be aware that the most crowded times are at the beginning and end of the weekend.
Driving in Norway is generally easy as traffic is calm and most drivers obey the law and traffic is usually light except in city centres. Traffic drives on the right and car hire is available in larger towns and airports but is costly. The minimum age for driving is 18 and there are severe penalties for driving under the influence of alchohol and parking illegally. Seat belts are compulsory and children younger than 12 must travel in the back seat. All vehicles must drive with dipped headlights on at all times and snow chains are advised during winter.
