Waipukurau is the main township in the Central Hawke’s Bay area and is located approximately 45 minutes south west from Hastings. The town sits alongside the lovely Tukituki River and its healthy trout population. The town is essentially rural in character, and a great deal of the local trade centres around local dairy and sheep farms, orchards and the meat works which is the major employer. There are a number of Galleries in the town where works from local and regional artists are displayed. Visitors can enjoy a warm and friendly sample of country life in a local farm stay or guest house. One fine example of unique accommodation and fine dining is Wallingford Homestead, which is situated about 20 minutes from Waipukurau and just 20 minutes from Porangahau. Wallingford Homestead is one of New Zealand's historic Homes and is reportedly the largest single storied dwelling in the Southern Hemisphere. Still a family home today, the homestead is able to comfortably accommodate up to 12 couples and functions for more than 70 people.
