New Zealand's people are generally friendly and willing to help out tourists. English is the common and everyday language spoken throughout New Zealand. However, several people speak other less well known languages, including Maori, which is also an official language. New Zealanders use the british form of english when spelling. As with most countries there are a large number of local terms and slang which can be interesting and amusing for visitors.

Mobile coverage is extensive and covers almost all populated areas. There are quite a few relatively sparsely populated areas around the country where coverage will be limited and the mountainous terrain means that mobile reception should not be relied on in these areas. There is both a CDMA network (Telecom NZ) and a GSM network (Vodaphone). Sim cards are available from airports and major centres around the country.

There are numerous ways to access the internet throughout New Zealand. There are many cyber cafes, and many major hotels will have wireless broadband access also, although this will often require payment. Many public libraries also have public internet access for a fee. The major airports in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch provide free wireless broadband.

New Zealand post is the national postal service. Post offices can be found around the country and offer an extensive range of local and international postage options.
