The Chihuahua Pacific Railway is an amazing railway journey which starts at the northern city of Chihuahua and traverses just over 650 kilometres or 400 miles to Los Mochis on the pacific coast.
The railway took just under 90 years to construct, it covers an incredible array of terrain including steep gorges and high mountains. There is an amazing 86 tunnels and 37 bridges along the route, and the railway is rightly regarded as an engineering masterpiece.
The journey is one of the most popular tourist routes in Mexico. Along the way the train passes through many small towns where tourists can get off to spend a little time. The biggest drawcard for the train is the world famous Copper Canyon, Mexico's answer to the Grand Canyon. Many passengers will choose to get off at Copper Canyon and spend some time hiking and enjoying this remarkable series of ravines and gorges. The train travels across some of the best scenery in the area.
The CHEPE as it is known is also very comfortable and has a bar, dining area and comfortable passenger cabins. It's no wonder some 260,000 passengers take the journey.
