Martinique is part of the arc of the Lesser Antilles, a volcanic chain that draws a boundary between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
The island is fascinating for the diversity and beauty of its landscapes: the north is divided between a tropical forest and beaches of black sand. Mount Pelee, at 1,397 m, is the highest point of Martinique. It offers a magnificent mid-mountain environment to explore. The wildlife, flora and history of the most famous volcano in the Caribbean make it a unique volcanic setting.
You should also take the opportunity to visit the various museums which will enable you to appreciate the diversity and wealth of Martinique’s history. In the Baie des Flamands, try Golf de la Martinique, designed in the unmistakable style of the great architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., who has here produced one of his most beautiful designs. Located in the village of Les Trois-Ilets, it respects the natural terrain of the site consisting of shores, trees, water features, bunkers and other obstacles over an area of 63 ha... Undoubtedly one of the finest 18-hole golf courses in the Caribbean!
And for something completely different, call in at the villages which have “pitts” to watch a cock or mongoose fight. The ceremony that precedes them is a highly colourful folk tradition... Then at nightfall, to the rhythm of a beguine, a mazurka or a zouk, you can taste an “old rum”, the true elixir of the island that will go perfectly with Colombo de Cabri (goat meat in a thick spicy sauce), stuffed crabs, Accras (spicy cod and vegetable fritters) and all the other wonderful dishes of Creole cuisine.
