See all locations in SabahLocated among the mangrove forests of Samawang and just a short drive from Sandakan, is the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. As the name suggests, this is the place to see one of the most distinctive and unusual inhabitants of Borneo - the proboscis monkey. The privately-owned sanctuary and lodge allows visitors to observe these usually shy and reclusive monkeys at close quarters. The best time to visit is during feeding, when these remarkable primates gather near the viewing platform in large numbers.
As well as the large-nosed, pot-bellied stars of the sanctuary, visitors can observe egrets, Maroon Leaf Monkeys and Oriental Small-clawed Otters. While night tours offer nature-lovers the chance to see fireflies, flying squirrels, wild boar and crocodiles.
