Languages

Malaysians of all ethnic groups are generally very friendly and keen to help visitors during their stay. Although the official language in Malaysia is Malay, in practice many Malaysians are able to speak English, especially in urban or tourist areas. Apart from the Malay language and its regional variants, various dialects of Chinese and Indian are commonly used by the respective ethnic groups, whilst the more remote indigenous tribes of Eastern Malaysia speak their own languages , including Iban and Kadazan.

When calling Malaysia from another country , the country code is +60. When placing an international call from Malaysia, the international access code is 00, except when dialing a Singapore number, in which case there is no need to dial either the access code (00) or the country code. Simply dial the area code of 02, followed by the number. Malaysia is serviced by four mobile phone carriers which mainly utilise the GSM (900 and 1800), 3G networks. Coverage is generally good, especially in the urban and main tourist areas. Although international roaming is possible if your carrier allows it, prepaid sim cards are widely available, with all of the major carriers offering competitive rates.

Internet access for travellers is widespread and reasonably priced with a good choice of connection options. Most hotels and hostels offer either cabled or WiFi access, whilst many restaurants and coffee shops offer free access to customers. Prices at internet cafes typically range between RM 2.5 to RM 5 per hour.
