Local Currency

Lithuania’s currency is the Lithuanian lita (Lt or LTL), which is divided into 100 centu. The notes come in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 litu, with coins in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 centu amounts, as well as 1, 2 and 5 litu coins. The Lithuanian lita has been fixed to the Euro since 2002 at a rate of 3.4528Lt to €1, therefore fluctuations in the Euro directly affect the value of the lita. In the first half of 2009, the US dollar on average was worth 2.6 lita. Euros and dollars are not accepted for cash payments in Lithuania. Currency exchange facilities, banks and ATM’s are common in the capital and other major cities, but may be harder to find in regional areas so extra cash is advisable if visiting remote areas. The best exchange rate is generally offered by banks. Major credit and debit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and retail outlets.

There is an 18% value-added tax (VAT) already included in all consumer prices.
