Languages

The official language of South Korea is Korean, which is spoken, along with its various regional dialects, by nearly all Koreans. With one of the lowest illiteracy rates in the world, all Koreans now learn English at school, so in most instances communication will not be a problem when visiting Korea.

The international code for dialling into Korea is +82 with the outgoing international access code usually being either 001 or 002, depending on the operator.

The country has three major service providers; KT SHOW, SK Telecom and LG Telecom, all of which offer prepaid mobile services. South Korea does not currently have a GSM network and uses the older CDMA standard, Some visitors with a 3G phone and SIM card may be able to roam onto the local WCDMA networks if their providers allow for it. Alternatively, you will find that all of the carriers offer mobile rentals, and outlets can be found at Seoul, Incheon, and Busan international airports. Public phone booths can be found in the busier areas of cities, and inside subway stations and other public transport facilities. Some of these phones accept only coins whilst others accept cards, which are widely available at convenience stores and booths.

South Korea is reputed to be the world’s most “wired” country, and reasonably priced access through internet cafes can be found easily throughout the country.
