Tokyo Information

Japan's capital is located on the eastern coast of the island of Honshu. Tokyo is one of the worlds most populous cities with over 12 million calling central Tokyo home. The greater Tokyo area houses a further 23 million people making the area the most densely populated on earth. Geographically, it is vast in size and there is no easily discernible centre but rather a huge expanse of districts stretching out to cover 2000 square kilometres. The central parts of the city is where Japanese Parliament sits, and is the site of the Japanese Imperial palace.

To describe Tokyo as thriving is an understatement, the city buzzes with a good natured energy around the clock and visitors will feel both welcomed and overwhelmed. Tokyo is a hub for all things new, where technology, fashion and art are always on the cutting edge. It is somewhat surprising that Tokyo is regarded as extremely safe and friendly, but visitors can be assured that walking the streets through the metropolis is a treat that can be enjoyed at all hours and there is always a friendly face to help out if needed. Public transport is readily available and efficient and is the only practical way to explore for any distance.

For all it's modernity Tokyo is actually an old city. It has it's origins as a fishing village some 400 years ago, and it still retains a core of traditional values and customs that are not immediately obvious. Throughout the city can be found examples of traditional japanese ways - old style public baths, traditional shrines and formal gardens. The interiors of many buildings also reflect minimalist styling that has been a trademark of Japan for centuries.

Although it is a cliché - there is something for almost anyone in Tokyo. Shopping, nightlife, food, art, culture, festivals and music just to get started.
