Venice Information

Venice is one of the landmark destinations of the world and has given countless tourists an experience that they will never forget. It is located in north east Italy and is famously situated on a lagoon alongside the Adriatic Sea.

Venice enjoys a completely justified reputation for being a spectacular city that has remained largely unchanged over six hundred years. There are no roads of any description. Getting around is done either on foot or by boat via the rivers and the dense network of canals that connect over one hundred small islands. Travelers can get to Venice fairly easily via a nearby airport, train station or car park and then make a short journey via water taxi to the city.

It is had to describe the delights of being let loose in a city built upon canals and walkways. Visitors can meander around a maze like labyrinth of paths that open up onto spectacular town squares bordered by shops and restaurants. Almost at every turn visitors are required to cross delightful little bridges with gondolas gliding silently past. The walls of the buildings are rich with ancient textures and colours, exposed brickwork nestled next to ornate windows with explosions of flowers growing on them. Venice is truly a feast for the eyes and is a city like no other.

The "Grand Canal" is Venice's largest waterway and is a useful reference point when navigating the city. The 800 year old "Rialto Bridge" crosses the canal and is an instantly recognisable landmark.

"Saint Mark's Basillica" and "Piazza San Marco", the square it sits adjacent to are a highlight of Venice. It consists of a very large, striking town square with gondolas on one side and Saint Marks church on the other. This square has been made famous in countless movies and is extremely popular even when it floods and tourists are forced to walk on improvised raised platforms and paths. Visitors should be aware that admission to the church can involve long queues and no photography is permitted.

There are many small museums in Venice with a range of specialities including modern art, classical art, antiquities and exhibitions displaying artifacts from Venice's history.

A quick trip across the water takes tourists to Murano Island, famous for its hand crafted glassware. Murano is another lovely destination that is very similar to the main part of venice with canals, bridges and plenty of places to stop and get refreshments. Burano is another island well worth visiting with beautiful houses painted in shades of colour and many shops selling its speciality, lace. While ferries to and from Venice are frequent, visitors may have to wait a while for ferry trips between the islands.

A trip to Venice is a trip back through time to arguably the worlds most beautiful and romantic city. Nothing can beat a gondola ride, gliding silently through a history that will stay with you forever
