Located on the northern side of the Sorrentine Peninsular in Italy's southwest the small resort town of Sorrento is a perfect location to explore the surrounding Campania region. Being part of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is blessed with a wonderful climate and very laid back lifestyle, and the hospitality of the locals is well known. The town of around 17,000 is perched overlooking the Bay of Naples and many of the villas and hotels cling to the high cliffs that line the shore.
Within the town there are many traditional cafes and restaurants that offer large helpings of local cuisine and dining alfresco on a balmy night under the stars is an unforgettable experience. A stroll along the Punta del Capo headland will reward you with views of an ancient Roman villa, while the Villa Comunale public park offers great views of the town, especially after dark.
Because of it's location day trips to the many attractions around Sorrento are very popular. The cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum that were destroyed by the famous eruption of Mount Vesuvius lie just to the north of Sorrento, and the Isle of Capri with it's spectacular natural scenery is just a short half hour trip across the bay.
Sorrento is a fabulous vacation town with great food, friendly inhabitants and wonderful climate and should be included on any visit to the beautiful Amalfi Coast.
