St Stephen's Green is a historic city parkland in the centre of Dublin. It is adjacent to Grafton Street - a shopping hub which includes the "St Stephens Green Shopping Centre".
The park has been open to the public since an act of parliament in 1877. Prior to this the area that today hosts the park had a long and interesting history including being used as a common grazing area in the 1600's and later a place of retreat for Dublin's wealthy. Sir A.E.Guiness paid for the refurbishment of the Green to it's current layout in 1880.
Today the Green comprises 22 hectares of landscaped flower beds, beautiful large trees, a lake, fountain and historic Georgian style buildings. Through out the park there are memorials to various historical figures from Dublin's past including James Joyce and a garden honouring Keats.
Around the park are numerous notable buildings including Iveagh House (originally owned by the Guiness Family), the Royal College of Surgeons and Loreto College, one of the best known private girls schools in Ireland.
St. Stephen's Green is an ideal place to relax and enjoy some tranquility away from the frenetic activity of Central Dublin.
