County Leitrim, located in the north of the Republic of Ireland, is characterised by its key feature: water. With its lakes, rivers, canals, water falls and bogs, Leitrim is a haven for those with an inclination for H2O. Visitors can enjoy river cruises on the River Shannon, wind-surfing at Tullaghan, or game fishing in one of the counties well-stocked lakes or rivers.

For the hiker, Leitrim features of number of well-signed walking trails that cover the entire county. However, if you are looking for a slower place, you can simply stroll through some of Leitrim's beautiful and friendly small towns, or simply enjoy the beauty of Glencar Waterfall.

Carrick-on-Shannon, Leitrim's county town, offers a surprisingly cosmopolitan feel for a town of 5000. Catch an impromptu Irish music gig in one of the town's many pubs and have a traditional Irish meal in one of its restaurants.
