With a uniqueness retained from bygone eras, the west of Ireland – which is boldly set on the edge of the Atlantic – is one of the country's most fascinating and culturally enriched regions.
Bravely facing the Atlantic Ocean, the west coast of Ireland has a multi-dimensional character that typifies the region's wide appeal. From its wild landscape and iconic small stone walls to the bustle of its cities and towns, there is much to see and do in this lively region, which is the home of traditional Irish music.
The Burren in County Clare is a perfect example of the uniqueness of the western countryside. The limestone landscape is awash with distinctive flora and fauna, while both the mighty Cliffs of Moher and the historic Bunratty Castle – Ireland's most authentic and complete medieval fortress – are also located in the same county.
Further north, the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) counties of Galway, Mayo and Donegal are a must see. Galway city, the island's cultural capital is a hive of activity all year round while the county of Mayo offers a glimpse of traditional Irish life from years gone by. The quaint island of Achill, the award-winning town of Westport and the holy mountain of Croagh Patrick are just a small selection of what's in store here, while a trip on the coastal drive of Donegal will give you a real insight into the gloriously rugged scenery of the region.
The west of Ireland is also steeped in history and heritage. To get a taste of Ireland's inspiring past, a trip to Rathcroghan in Roscommon, the ancient home of the High Kings, is highly recommended.
