Galway City Information

Situated in the mid west of ireland Galway is the fifth largest and fastest growing city in Ireland. Galways origins have been traced back to a settlement surrounding a fort and the river Corrib in the twelfth century. The following centuries has seen Galway's fotunes wax and wane from the heights of being a significant trading town in the middle ages to succumbing to a nine month siege during the Cromwellian conquest of ireland. Galway has taken advantage of the economic boom of the twentieth century and is now a vibrant town of over 70,000 locals.

Young, colourful and cosmopolitan yet steeped in history, Galway City is a vibrant place that has become a magnet for artists, musicians, writers and students, and is now as famous for its exuberant arts scene as its buzzing nightlife.

Galway is nicknamed 'Irelands Cultural heart' and is renowned for its festivals, events, celebrations, friendly locals and historical architecture. It oozes energy; walking through the colourful pedestrian streets of the city centre, past the quirky shops, bustling restaurants and ever-present buskers, the buzz is unmistakable. And despite being one of the fastest growing cities in Europe, it has retained the friendly character and manageable proportions of small town Ireland.

In 2007 Galway was named as one of the eight sexiest cities in the world and in 2008 was ranked as the 42nd best tourist destination in the world.
