The prison is opposite the Crumlin Road Courthouse which is also no longer in use.Crumlin Road Gaol operated over a 150 year period from 1846 until it was closed in 1996. During it's years of operation the prison hosted around 25,000 prisoners. It also had an execution chamber which was used from 1901 until 1961.
The prison is the only Victorian era prison remaining in Northern Ireland, and is listed with the Northern Ireland Environmental Agency because of it's historical values and architectural significance.
Visitors can take guided tours of the Gaol on Saturdays and Sundays.
