Achill Island is the largest Irish island, and is situated just off the western coast in County Mayo. It is accessible via a bridge from the mainland. The island has been populated from around 3000BC and there have been a number of ruins and artifacts still from various periods of history discovered there, the island is home to a school of archaeology.
The island is a place of striking natural beauty, it has a number of safe and sandy swimming beaches, dramatic headlands and mountainous areas, providing sweeping views of the coastline and surroundings. A large proportion of the island is peat bog, so farming and agriculture has been limited over it's history.
There is an established tourism industry on Achill so visitors are spoilt for choice. The island is a great location for those interested in history, as well as nature lovers and those who just like to relax by the sea.
