Hungary is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The country offers many diverse destinations with low mountains in the north-west and the Great Plain in the east. Budapest, the capital, is situated on the Danube River is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities of the world.
Despite its small size, Hungary is home to many UNESCO listed World Heritage Sites and nature reserves. Lake Heviz is the second largest thermal lake in the world, and the largest lake in Central Europe, Lake Balaton is also in Hungary. Hortobágy National Park contains a part of the largest area of natural grassland in Europe. Hungary is also blessed when it comes to impressive architecture. It is home to the largest synagogue in Europe, the Great Synagogue, and also has its share of stunning churches, castles and impressive historic sites. The Esztergom Basilica is the third largest church in Europe.
The second largest city is Debrecen; Eger is famous for its baroque buildings, castles and wines. Aggtelek has beautiful caves full of stalagmites. The former royal palace is situated at Godollo and to see an historic preserved village a visit to Holloko is a must. To enjoy the beautiful wines of Hungary simply visit Tokaj - a lovely town, famous for it's quality white wines.
Hungary became a fully fledged member of NATO in 1999 and, with nine so-called accession countries, was admitted into the EU in May 2004.
