Over the years, Kowloon city (whose name literally translates to ‘nine dragons’) has evolved from an industrial district into a residential area, and today is a huge tourist destination with streets of shopping, restaurants, hotels and nightlife - all crowded with visitors from around the world.
Kowloon is the place to find specialist street markets selling everything from clothes and flowers to goldfish and jade. These markets offer great value with a unique Hong Kong ambience and a real slice of local life and are mostly found in the shopping areas of Tsim Sha Tsui and Nathan Road. The liveliest night market in the territory is on Temple Street in Yau Ma Tei.
Tsim Sha Tsui, at the top of the Peninsula, is the territory’s tourist heartland. It consists of a square kilometre of retail shopping, restaurants, pubs, bars and electronics stores. However, Kowloon has another face as a cultural destination and has the Space Museum, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the wonderful Colonial Peninsula Hotel and the Museum of History.
