INDEX OF ALL states AND LOCATIONSTraditionally Hong Kong locals have often been thought to be rude and lacking in courtesy, however this is more a function of living in such a fast paced environment where courtesy may sometimes be discarded in favour of efficiency. This can be observed in the fact that small talk is often not engaged in by shopkeepers and sometimes a thank you is not forthcoming even when buying goods. In places where western tourists are common or in major stores, courtesy is more of a standard western visitors may be used to. Many locals may find it uncomfortable to engage in small talk with people they do not know.
Tipping is generally not expected in Hong Kong, however some establishments may include a service charge in the bill. Tips may not go to the staff as intended and so a few coins will suffice if you feel the need to reward for good service.
Bartering is common in street stalls and it is certainly not considered impolite to enquire about a discount even in a major department store. Many retailers will offer a gift as an inducement to purchase particular products.
A very large proportion of the population is Han Chinese and speak Cantonese. Because of the British influence there are significant differences from the mainland Chinese culture and customs. The Hong Kong Chinese have been largely free of the communist influence and had a high degree of exposure to foreign tourists and business trade. They enjoy wide ranging freedoms similar to western countries.
Loud talking or laughing in public or the sharing of ones views about politics may be considered uncooth by many locals. Most Hong Kong residents are not idealistic in their political outlook and are unlikely to be comfortable talking about such matters, especially with visitors or tourists. When meeting people at a social function a firm handshake is the traditional greeting and a slight dip of the head may also be used.
Hong Kong's culture is a unique blend of its fascinating political history. Officially, it is now a Special Administrative Region of China. However, this port was once central to the British Empire's operations. Thus Hong Kong celebrates both Christmas and Chinese New Year, and holds Rugby Sevens tournaments and Chinese Culture festivals.
