The main international airport in Guatemala is the Aeropuerto La Aurora (GUA)in Guatemala City, and is located about 6km to the south. There is a bus service from the airport to the city, as well as taxi services. The only other international airport is Flores (FRS) and is about 3km from the city of Flores, and about an hours drive from the UNESCO Archeological park in Tikal. The national airline, TACA has regular flights between Flores and Guatemala City. Expect to pay Q5 in travel tax for domestic flights. Cheap local bus services are plentiful throughout the towns and cities of Guatemala. However, they are usually crowded and the driving can be haphazard, with accidents commonplace. There are more expensive air-conditioned bus services available for inter-city travel, as well as privately run minibuses travelling to most of the main tourist destinations. In the cities and towns, visitors are advised to use taxis (radio-dispatched) as a means to get around. Car hire is an option, with international and local companies based in Guatemala City. However, travellers should consider the fact that some of the roads are in poor condition and that certain roads are notorious for armed hold-ups. If you do choose to travel by car, it is advisable to purchase an International Driving Permit before travelling. There is an emergency service PROVIAL that patrols the main highways (Ph:24227878).
