Champs Elysees Information

The Avenue des Champs-Élysées is one of the most prestigious avenues in all of Paris and is one of the most famous avenues in the world. It's is claimed by the French to be "la plus belle avenue du monde" ("the most beautiful avenue in all the world"). It runs for 2km through northwesten Paris and is lined with chic, upmarket shops, restaurants and cafes. It is a massive tree-lined avenue that links the Arc de Triomphe in the west with the place de la Concorde to the east passing the Obelisk of Luxor on the way.

The Champs-Élysées began life in the early 17th century with the planting of an avenue of trees within the local market gardens. Over the ensuing two centuries it was slowly transformed and it wasn't until the late 1700s that the Avenue became a fashionable location for royalty and aristocracy. Nowadays it's one of the most expensive addresses in the world and has undergone numerous expansions and improvements.

The eastern end of the Champs-Élysées is an oasis of greenery and contains exquisite gardens, marble statues and finely cropped topiaries. It is also the location of the place de la Concorde - the largest public square in Paris with an area of more than 86,000 square metres. Here can also be found the two magnificent Fontaines de la Concorde - the Fountain of River Commerce and Navigation and the Fountain of Maritime Navigation.

Further along the Champs-Élysées to the west is where you'll find many open air cafes, upmarket retail shops, cinemas and restaurants. This is one of the most expensive locations in the world in which to house a business so expect to pay premium prices when shopping or dining. There is however no charge for strolling down the Avenue and this is where you'll discover the true beauty of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Street performers and open air marionette theatres perform along the tree lined promenade and it's common to see young couples strolling hand in hand to the background bussle of non-stop traffic.

To the west is the impressive Arc de Triomphe located within the Place Charles de Gaulle. The massive 50m high monument is 45m wide and 22m deep and is the centre pin in a confluence of streets and avenues that radiate out from it.
