Fiji, also known as the Fijian islands is a picturesque Melanesian country located in the South Pacific Ocean. Fiji is made up of 332 islands, 110 of which are inhabited, the capital being Suva.

It is located two thirds of the way from west-southwest of Hawaii to New Zealand and midway between the South Pole and the equator.

In 1643, Able Tasman, a Dutch explorer landed in Fiji, after him came Captain Cook, but it wasn’t until Captain William Bligh came along that Fiji became well known. In 1874 it became a British Colony and stayed under British rule until 1970 when it became an independent country.

Fiji is famous for its amazing tropical enviornment, scuba diving and surfing (with numerous surf camps located around the islands). It is a favoured destination for weddings, honeymoons, family holidays and relaxing amongst the coral atolls on palm fringed beaches.

There are four major regions to Fiji:

The Lomaiviti group has a number of large islands along with numerous small ones.

The Mamanuca group of islands is for surfing and white sandy beaches. They are known as ‘surfer’s playground’.

Viti Levu islands consist of 300 islands, which make it the biggest and culturally cross region. Over half of Fiji’s population lives here. These islands are known for their lush tropical mountains, rivers, waterfalls, traditional Fijian villages, hiking and rafting.

The Yasawa group is best known for its idyllic sandy beaches and the stunning coral reef, backpacking and accommodation.
