The Lizard Information

“The Lizard” is actually the name of the village perched at the most southerly point of mainland Britain - the Lizard Peninsula. The village of serpentine craft and gift shops, cafes and inns clustered around the village green makes a good base for walks on the peninsula.

Lizard Point itself has an awe inspiring rugged beauty, its lighthouse flashing out a 26 mile beam to guide mariners navigating the English Channel. Also at nearby Bass Point is the Lizard Wireless Station.

To the east of Lizard Village are pretty hamlets such as; St Martin, Cadgwith, Porthoustock, Porthallow and Ruan Minor. There are also ideal family beaches such as Kennack Sands - where Daphne du Maurier learned to swim as a child.

To the west you will find other places to explore such as, Kynance Cove, Mullion Cove,Poldhu and Gunwalloe - where at Church Cove you will find Gunwalloe Church on the beach.

The Lizard Peninsula is unique, standing alone in a very real sense, and designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The South West Coast Footpath winds its way around the peninsula providing exceptionally beautiful walks for ramblers of all ages and ability.
