Kirkby Stephen Information

The historic town of Kirkby Stephen has many excellent facilities to offer its visitors, including a large range of accommodation, places to eat, fascinating antiques and curio shops.

The beautiful countryside surrounding the town is perfect for walking and cycling, retaining a special character and tranquillity whilst accommodating no fewer than 11 long distance walks and cycle ways. Wainwright's famous Coast to Coast path brings many visitors to the town, a place where walkers meet to enjoy much needed refreshment.

On the southern edge of the town is the site of Croglam Castle, an example of prehistoric earthworks. The ruins of Pendragon Castle, famed for its connection with King Arthur, lie deep in the magnificent Mallerstang Valley. Legend has it that Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur, was poisoned in the castle.
