From the great heritage cities of York and Chester to the Lake District and Hadrian's Wall, National Parks and rugged coastlines, Englands North Country is hard to sum up in a few paragraphs.
Some of the industrial centres of the past have grown to become among Europes most culturally creative cities. Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle have retained their historic hearts while becoming hubs for chic restaurants, arts and fashion. Elsewhere in York, Chester, Durham and Carlisle, medieval and Roman history is still able to be visited in bustling traffic free town centres. Charming fishing villages along the Heritage Coast are another favourite among the many who travel from near or far.

Dozens of short treks are spread throughout the counties or for the more serious walker the famous coast to coast walk or the Transpennine Trail. Cyclists can enjoy unspoiled landscapes as they cover kilometres around the Lake District, North York or the Yorkshire Dales.
