Chorley Information

Where did Shakespeare begin his working life? At Hoghton Tower near Chorley, the 16th century home of the de Hoghton family. It was also here, in 1617, that the sirloin steak came into being, when King James I famously knighted a loin of beef.

Whether you want fascinating and historic sites, fun and excitement, relaxation in beautiful countryside, or a unique shopping experience, Chorley, on the fringe of the West Pennine Moors, has it all.

Venture into King Arthur's Kingdom at Camelot Theme Park for a magical day out. With thrilling rides, amazing magic shows and spectacular jousting, this attraction is fun for all the family. Or step back in time to 16th century Astley Hall in 94 acres of parkland, where Oliver Cromwell allegedly left his boots when he visited, which remain there to this day. The hall contains unique furniture, sumptuous plaster ceilings and wall hangings.

Join the antiques hunters at Botany Bay, Bygone Times and Heskin Hall, or visit Cedar Farm to see the treasures of tomorrow being created, including jewellery, glass, textiles, ceramics and contemporary art. Discover Chorley's historic market, still going strong after 600 years.

Rivington Country Park is one of Lancashire's finest scenic areas, with many historic features, including the ornamental gardens of Lever Park.

The magnificent countryside of Astley Park, Cuerden Valley Park and Yarrow Valley Park offer excellent walks and outdoor activities. The Leeds-Liverpool Canal provides endless entertainment and fun, with day trips in narrow boats, waterside pubs and restaurants, and the fascinating locks at Wheelton.
