One of the most central provinces in the entire Cibao region, Salcedo y Quita Espuela was known simply as Salcedo for many years. The province was renamed Hermanas Mirabal [Mirabal Sisters] a few years ago in honor of the three heroic Dominican sisters Minerva, Patria and Maria Teresa Mirabal who fought for the country's freedom.
Tourist Attractions:
Murales Route: Native artists from the province as well as artists from other cities have made their contributions to Salcedo by painting murals on hospitals, high schools and private and public companies. Among them are Elsa Nunez, Alberto Bass and Candido Bido. The original goal was to paint 100 murals, but there are now more than 135 murals.
Mirabal Sisters Museum: The home that once belonged to the Mirabal sisters and their family is a house-museum today, located at Km. 4 on the highway that goes from Salcedo to Tenares in the community of Ojo de Agua. Mrs. Dede Mirabal, one of the sisters and the only survivor, still lives there.
Coffee Route: In the district of Jamao near Salcedo, various trails track through the plantations in this area, whose height (between 700 and 1,400 meters) is suitable for coffee bushes. The route can be traversed in a 4x4, on muleback or on foot and displays the various processes for the cultivation and preparation of coffee, with stops at an old shack where you will be served coffee in the traditional fashion. You can visit waterfalls, grottoes and forests here.
Scientific Preserve Quita Espuela: Very close to Salcedo, the preserve is located in the neighboring province of Duarte and is less than a mile away from the city of San Francisco de Macoris. It is easily accessed from the highway and offers facilities to observe cocoa cultivation and eco-tourism. The preserve is also an excellent site for bird-watching with about 58 avian species. The Scientific Reserve features a joint program with the Vermont Center for Ecostudies, for the conservation of the bird known as the Bicknell Thrush. This thrush migrates to the Quita Espuela Hillin the winter. The Quita Espuela Foundation is cooperating with the Vermont Center in an ambitious two-year conservation program for this bird in the Northern Cordillera.
